Chapter 11

“Galatia, baby, I’m sorry it took me so long to get home last night. Junior called and said he needed me to help him with something.”

“Help him with what?” she fussed.

After leaving the track yesterday, Joseph had convinced Willie that they should get in on a dice game. Joseph had won $1000 but because of his greed he’d lost it back. He now only hand a measly $5 to his name. He and Willie had spent several hours drinking and waddling in self-pity.

“Man stuff. Baby come here. Don’t you believe me?” He wooed her and pulled her into his arms.

“You know you look sexy when you mad. Give me some of that sweet sweet.”

Joseph caressed her and gave her a long, passionate kiss.

Galatia was melting by his touch until the buzzing sound of his cell phone interrupted them.

“Give me one minute. I’ll be right back.” Joseph retrieved his phone and left the room.

He entered the bathroom to answer the call.

“Man, what are we going to do?” Willie Jr. shouted before he could say hello.

“Calm down. Imma think of something.”

“I knew I shoulda went with my first mind. Now I gotta pay the church back. Brenda won’t even talk to me,” Willie shouted.

“Why you yelling at me? You wanted in. You could have told me no, so don’t try to act like this is all my fault.” Joseph back peddled.

“Unbelievable, just freaking unbelievable/ I can’t believe you right now.”

“Answer this, do I have access to the church’s money? No. Do I have access to your money? No. Did I hold a gun to your head and make you place that bet? No.”

“It was your idea,” Willie said, getting more irritated.

“I never said you had to do it. I just presented it to you,” Joseph pointed out.

“Yeah, you presented it as a sure thing and I took the bait. Just like Eve in the garden, I let the serpent deceive me. My father was right when he told me to stay away from you. I should have listened to him.” Willie hung up the phone before Joseph could reply.

Joseph suddenly felt nervous. He didn’t know what Willie planned on doing. What if he told Ephesia, or better yet, what if he told Grady Sanders? Joseph hadn’t planned on going to church today but felt like he needed to be there just in case Willie decided to run his mouth.

When Joseph entered the bedroom, Galatia had his blue and grey pinstriped suit on the bed. She was wearing a blue and grey dress to match with a big blue hat. Galatia loved to dress like her husband. All of the ladies at the church glared at them every Sunday and Galatia loved the attention.

“Honey, hurry up and get dressed so we can go,” Galatia stated as she was in the closet looking for her shoes. “Who was that on the phone?”

“That was Junior calling to ask if I was going to church today,” he lied.

“Why wouldn’t you be going to church? And why on earth would he be calling to ask that?” she questioned.
